Dentokan - the organisation

The Sekai Dentokan Bugei Renmei (World School of Traditional Martial Arts Federation), was founded by Col (Ret) Roy J. Hobbs, Hanshi as a means of providing instruction, and certification, in the various martial arts he has studied and practiced for over 50 years. The Dentokan is by design an independent martial arts association, which is purposely unaffiliated with any other martial arts organization. If they so choose individual Dentokan dojo or individuals are free to join, train with, or affiliate with other martial arts groups or sporting authorities.

Dentokan - what we do

Kata - predefined sequences of blocks, strikes, locks and holds against an imaginary attacker. Many of these katas are 100s of years old, without written records of the Shorin Ryu or Goju Ryu style. The only way they are prevented from being lost over time is by their accurate dissemination from sensei to student.

Sport Jujitsu Kumite and WKF kumite - Sports Jujitsu involves kicks, punches, blocks and take downs. Once on the floor combatants have 10 seconds to submit their opponent. WKF kumite is as above without take downs although sweeps are allowed. They differ in scoring and target areas.

Aikijutsu – This is a traditional Japanese martial art practiced for hundreds of years and is the basis for modern day Aikido, in the same way that jujutsu is the basis for modern Judo.  Aiki Jutsu focuses on locks, throws and holds for restraint. By moving in harmony with an opponent and diverting his/her energy you can unbalance and ‘defeat’ them without using strength or undue force.

Goshin Jutsu – Literally means self defence. One reason many people take up martial arts is for self defence. The goshin jutsu part of our syllabus teaches students to take the learning from traditional karate and aikijutsu and incorporate it effectively in modern day self defence

Kobudo - the martial art of traditional weapons. These are usually Okinawan farming implements. We learn the most effective way of using these and the katas that go with them.

Weapons include Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Nunchaka and Kama.

Iaijutsu - The way of the sword.
